On 4 and 5 March 2017 four SSAC members: Robert Sears, Paul Bulmer, Chris Owen & Mike Roberson attended the BSAC Wales Region Boat Handling Course and Ange Kitson sucessfully completed her Coxwains Assessment.
We arrived at Holyhead on Friday evening having found a Harvey's diner that was open at 21:00 (by Tescos in Bangor - highly recommend it!) to find that the Holyhead Sea Scouts bunk house was pure luxury. Nice and warm with an excelent kitchen & seating area. Some of us missed the internal rainwater drainage that we get at Tyn Rhos though!
Saturday started with the boat handlers doing their theory whilst the Coxwains did their assessments. By lunchtime the rain had (mostly) stopped and the boathandlers got their chance. We had three RIBS, including our SSAC boat, with three trainees and an instructor on each boat. On Saturday evening we all became temporary members of hte Holyhead Yacht Club and then went on for a lovely meal at the Harbourfront Bisto.
On Sunday the boat handlers had the whole day in the boats. We started in the harbour and then practised some rougher water handling outside of the harbour. Althogh it was cold and drizzly, the wind was light and the sea flat. So we all headed off to the overfalls at South Stack to find some rougher (and somewhat confused water!).
All in all a great weekend. Many thanks to all the instructors and Dai Atkins who organised the whole weekend.
